Alternative Software:
AlternativeTo (http://alternativeto.net/) is a collaboratively filtered database of open-source alternatives to expensive computer programs: i.e., it’s an essential bookmark.
The site’s layout is inviting and easy to navigate: Type in the software you would rather not purchase (e.g. Final Cut Pro, which costs $1,299) and you will be presented with a wide array of substitutes (e.g., a free open-source editing program called Avidemux). The site’s choices are listed according to user ratings, and it relies on the public to contribute newly discovered alternatives. It’s like an online flea market: You never know what gems you’re about to stumble upon.
Sending Large Files via EMail:
Do you ever need to send large attachments (files or photos) via email but the message gets rejected from the receipient’s email server? There are a lot of ISP’s (AOL, Yahoo, etc) that put a restriction on the size of attachments that can be sent via email. As an alternative, you can use YouSendIt (www.yousendit.com) service to send your large files. This service acts like a virtual FTP site.
- You compose your email online and then attach the file (if there are more than one file, then they should be zipped (compressed)) and then click on SendIt.
- YouSendIt will then upload the file to their servers as a repository location.
- The Lite (FREE) service will allow you to send a maximum file size of 100 MB/email message. The recipient will receive an email from you with a link to the file.
- If the file attachment is more than 20 MB, then you will need to sign up and create an account. The registration is FREE.
- They click on the link and then it will prompt the user to download and save the file.
- You do not want to click on Open after Download. You want to save the file and then open it up using it’s related program.
Enjoy and start sending those large file attachments!
Synchronizing Bookmarks (Internet Explorer):
Do you wish you can have the same bookmarks (from Internet Explorer or Firefox) from your work computer on your home computer or vice versa? Well, your wish has been granted. There is a program that can sync your bookmarks between both (work & home) computer called Bookmarksync (www.bookmarksync.com).
- Just sign up (FREE) and create a profile. Then click on Download and select your software version (PC or MAC OS X).
- Download and install the bookmarksync client to your work & home computer.
- I would install the client on the computer that has all of the bookmarks that you would like to sync up.
- Once the client is installed, it will upload your bookmarks to the bookmarksync.com website.
- Then install the bookmarksync client on the other computer.Voila, you now have the same bookmarks in both locations. Now whenever you add a new bookmark, it will upload to their server and then sync with your other computer.
- Once installed, it will mention that the bookmarks on their server is newer than the ones in your browser.
- Select the recommended choice.
One other neat feature of this FREE service is that if you are using a public computer (at an internet cafe), you can go to www.bookmarksync.com, log in using your credentials and then click on the My Links tab. This will bring up a page with your bookmarks. So if there is a website that you bookmarked and forgot the URL, you can click on the bookmark link and then it will take you to the desired webpage. How cool is that?
Have fun with your bookmarks!!!
Synchronizing Bookmarks (Firefox):
The above program “BookmarkSync” works well with Internet Explorer but has some issues with Firefox.
A good program to use for the Firefox browser is called Xmarks (www.xmarks.com). Xmarks supports Firefox 3, Internet Explorer 7 or 8, or Safari on the MAC OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
- Download xmarks client and then sign up to create a profile (FREE).
- Run through the setup wizard to establish a baseline of your bookmarks and it will sync up to their servers.
- Then install the client software onto the other computer (home) and follow the wizard steps and use your log in credentials from the first client installation.
- It will merge OR you can have the server bookmarks overwrite the bookmarks that are on your computer.
- Now anytime you add a bookmark or organize your bookmarks, the changes will take place on the 2nd computer and vice versa.
