eMazzanti Secures Snowmaking System at Sochi Olympics

Microsoft’s 2012 Partner of the Year provides security solution

Hoboken, New Jersey (Vocus) Feb, 2014 – eMazzanti Technologies, an international consulting and information technology company based in the New York City Metro area, is playing an important role in the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games by securing one of its most important ingredients—snow. Reliant on what Mother Nature can’t always provide, artificial snowmakers play a pivotal role.  In an effort to prevent the system from falling victim to tampering and cyber threats, eMazzanti was selected to protect the machines and allow planners to insure that there would be plenty of snow for the games.

Finding Olympic quality IT security

In 2013, when Olympic snowmaking specialists went looking for the IT expertise to provide security for the system, they approached Microsoft for guidance. Microsoft recommended their 2012 Partner of the Year, eMazzanti Technologies to propose a solution.  After being judged “most thorough and efficient” in their response, eMazzanti’s eCare security experts were chosen to modify the Windows 7 based system so that it could do nothing but snowmaking.

“Using an off-the-shelf security product was not an option, so we designed and implemented a custom solution,” explained Carl Mazzanti, CEO, eMazzanti Technologies. “We locked down the snowmaking computer operating system in Russia from New Jersey without ever needing to get on a flight.”

The high-tech Sochi snowmaking system

The technologically advanced snowmaking system in Sochi uses three computers and two large monitors to control and display all aspects of the snowmaking process from real-time weather to flow rates and operating schedule. A total of 403 fully automated snowmaking machines mounted on towers, swing arms and carriages are used to manufacture snow as needed to make sure the athletes have enough to jump, snowboard, flip and ski on for the duration of the games.

“The Sochi snowmaking team has one expert they call the Snow Whisperer,” related Mazzanti. “We are genuinely honored to be the Security Whisperers behind the Sochi snow.”
