DOMAIN FRAUD DEFENSE (DMARC)

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) protects your domain from being spoofed by attackers. Without DMARC, criminals can send emails that appear to come from your domain — damaging your brand and tricking your customers. MXINSPECT implements DMARC so that fraudulent emails claiming to be from your domain are blocked before they reach anyone.

EMAIL DELIVERABILITY - SPF & DKIM

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) ensure your emails actually reach their destination. SPF tells receiving mail servers which IPs are authorized to send on your behalf. DKIM adds a cryptographic signature so recipients can verify your emails haven’t been tampered with. Together with DMARC, these three protocols are required by Google, Yahoo, and Outlook to avoid spam filtering. MXINSPECT configures and manages all three for you.

Email Security FAQs

Is Microsoft 365 email security enough to protect a small business from phishing and malware?

Microsoft 365 includes basic email filtering, but it was not designed as a standalone security product and does not address the full spectrum of modern email threats. It can miss sophisticated phishing attacks that do not contain known malicious signatures, impersonation emails that mimic trusted senders without using malicious content, zero-hour threats that have not yet been classified, and advanced URL attacks where links appear legitimate at delivery but redirect to malicious content after scanning. More than 90% of targeted cyberattacks start with email, and attackers specifically design campaigns to bypass standard Microsoft 365 filtering. A dedicated email security layer that adds dynamic URL analysis, impersonation detection, and zero-hour threat protection significantly improves protection beyond what Microsoft 365 provides natively.

What is email continuity and why does a business need it?

Email continuity is the ability to send and receive email during a mail server outage or network disruption — ensuring that business communication does not stop even when the primary email infrastructure is unavailable. Without email continuity, a Microsoft 365 outage, an on-premise server failure, or a network incident can leave employees unable to access email for hours or even days. Email continuity solutions work by maintaining a parallel emergency inbox that activates automatically when the primary environment becomes unavailable, spooling incoming messages during the outage and replaying them to the mail server once it recovers. For businesses that rely on email to communicate with customers, vendors, and partners, even a few hours of email downtime can result in missed orders, delayed responses, and lost revenue.

What is DMARC and why do businesses need it to prevent email spoofing?

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is an email authentication protocol that prevents criminals from sending emails that appear to come from your domain. Without DMARC, anyone can forge the "From" address in an email to make it look like it originated from your organization — a technique used in phishing campaigns targeting your customers, partners, or employees. DMARC works by telling receiving mail servers what to do with emails claiming to be from your domain that fail authentication checks: deliver, quarantine, or reject them. When properly configured with SPF and DKIM, DMARC ensures that only authorized senders can use your domain, protecting your brand reputation and preventing your organization's name from being used in fraud.

What is the difference between SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, and do I need all three?

SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC work together as three complementary layers of email authentication. SPF identifies which mail servers are authorized to send email on behalf of your domain — any server not on the list fails SPF. DKIM adds a cryptographic signature to outgoing emails that the receiving server can verify, confirming the message has not been tampered with in transit. DMARC uses the results of SPF and DKIM checks to enforce a policy on what happens to emails that fail authentication — and provides reporting so domain owners can see who is sending email claiming to be from their domain. All three are needed because each addresses different aspects of email fraud: SPF alone cannot prevent all spoofing, DKIM alone does not block unauthorized senders, and DMARC has no enforcement without the authentication data that SPF and DKIM provide. Google, Yahoo, and Outlook now require all three for bulk senders to avoid spam filtering.

What is MXINSPECT and how does it differ from built-in Microsoft 365 email filtering?

MXINSPECT is eMazzanti's cloud-based enterprise-grade email security, continuity, and archiving solution designed specifically for small and mid-sized businesses. It differs from Microsoft 365's built-in filtering by adding layers that Microsoft does not provide natively: dynamic URL and attachment analysis that checks links at click-time rather than only at delivery, impersonation email detection that catches Business Email Compromise attempts using display name spoofing, zero-hour threat detection for novel malware not yet in signature databases, data loss prevention to prevent sensitive information from leaving the organization via email, 24/7 email continuity with emergency inbox and 30-day instant replay, DMARC/DKIM/SPF configuration and management, and email archiving for compliance and eDiscovery. The entire platform is managed through a single cloud console with no hardware or software to install.

What is the difference between MXINSPECT Basic and MXINSPECT Premium?

Both MXINSPECT Basic and Premium include advanced spam blocking, URL defense protection, data loss prevention, email continuity (24/7 emergency inbox, 30-day instant replay, and email spooling), signature-based antivirus with zero-hour threat detection, impersonation email detection, and DMARC/DKIM/SPF domain fraud protection. MXINSPECT Premium adds email encryption for sending sensitive content securely, social media account protection for up to three accounts, extended email outage protection, optional message continuity, and all engineering assistance, troubleshooting, and support hours included in the plan. Security Awareness Training and Message Archive are available as optional add-ons to either plan, purchased separately through the plan configurator.

How does MXINSPECT's email archiving help businesses with compliance and eDiscovery?

MXINSPECT's Message Archive add-on automatically preserves all inbound and outbound emails and attachments in a tamper-proof archive — eliminating the need to manually save or manage email records for compliance purposes. The archive supports up to 10 years of retention with unlimited storage in the Flex option, meeting retention requirements under regulations such as HIPAA, SOX, FINRA, and various state-level data retention laws. For legal matters or regulatory investigations, administrators can perform complex searches across the entire archive and export results for eDiscovery — and employees can search and forward their own archived emails without IT involvement. Historical email can also be imported into the archive from prior systems, ensuring continuity of the retention record when organizations switch email providers.

How does eMazzanti configure and manage DMARC, SPF, and DKIM for businesses?

eMazzanti configures SPF, DKIM, and DMARC as part of the MXINSPECT email security deployment — handling the DNS record changes, DKIM key generation, and DMARC policy configuration that most organizations do not have the technical expertise to implement correctly on their own. Incorrect DMARC configuration is one of the most common email deliverability problems, and poorly configured SPF or DKIM records can cause legitimate outbound email to be flagged as spam. eMazzanti's implementation ensures all three protocols work together correctly, establishes DMARC reporting so the organization can see what is being sent in its name, and progressively tightens the DMARC policy from monitoring to quarantine to reject as the configuration is validated — protecting the domain from spoofing without disrupting legitimate email delivery during the transition.
