What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?

Backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the tested ability to get your business running again on that data within a defined timeframe. A backup answers the question of whether the files still exist, while disaster recovery answers how fast systems, applications, and users come back and who does what to make that happen. Most businesses have the first and assume it gives them the second.

What are RTO and RPO?

RTO, the recovery time objective, is the maximum acceptable time a system can be down before it hurts the business. RPO, the recovery point objective, is the maximum amount of data you can afford to lose, measured in time since the last good copy. A four hour RTO with a fifteen minute RPO means the system is running again within four hours and you lose at most fifteen minutes of work. We set both per system in writing, because they drive the design and the cost.
