Could You Actually Restore What You'd Need To?

Five quick questions about backup, retention, patching, and recovery. No email required to see your result.

0 of 5 answered
01

Do you know the difference between Microsoft 365 retention and an actual backup?

Retention preserves data for compliance. It does not restore a deleted mailbox, a corrupted file, or an account wiped by ransomware the way a real backup does.

02

Have you actually tested restoring a mailbox, file, or site in the last 12 months?

A backup you've never restored is a guess, not a safety net. Testing reveals whether recovery would work — and how long it would take.

03

Are you still running Exchange Server 2016 or 2019 on-premises?

Security updates for both versions have ended. Every new vulnerability disclosed from here forward stays open, with no further patches coming.

04

Could you produce a specific email or document tomorrow if legal or an auditor asked for it?

Retention policies satisfy an auditor. They don't always satisfy a fast, specific request without a documented eDiscovery process behind them.

05

If ransomware hit tomorrow, do you know exactly what you'd recover — and how fast?

Recovery time and recovery point matter as much as whether backups exist at all.

Data protection & business continuity services

Turn "We Have Retention" Into "We Can Actually Recover."

eMazzanti helps translate Microsoft 365 retention, backup, patching, and recovery expectations into practical, tested protection — not just a policy on paper.

M365 Backup

Microsoft 365 Backup Services

Retention policies alone don't protect against deletion, corruption, or ransomware. We implement independent backup for Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams, with restore points you can actually test.

For any business relying on Microsoft 365 for email and files.
Exchange Server

Exchange Server Migration & Patching

Security updates for Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 have ended. We assess your environment and migrate you to a supported, patched platform before the next disclosed vulnerability becomes an open door.

For businesses still running Exchange Server on-premises.
Ransomware

Ransomware Recovery Readiness

We review recovery time objectives, test restores, and confirm backups are isolated from the systems they protect, so a ransomware event becomes a recovery, not a rebuild.

For any business that can't afford extended downtime.
eDiscovery

eDiscovery & Retention Policy Review

We align your retention policies with your legal, compliance, and litigation-hold obligations, so you can find and produce a specific record quickly — not just retain it indefinitely.

For legal, compliance, and regulated teams.
Governance

Information Governance Consulting

We help classify, retain, and dispose of data intentionally, turning years of accumulated email and files into a defensible, searchable asset instead of a liability.

For organizations managing growing data risk.
Assessment

Data Protection Gap Assessment

We measure your current backup, retention, patching, and recovery posture against what your business would actually need in an outage, breach, or legal request.

Find the gaps before an incident does.

Not sure where your data protection actually stands? Start by finding out what's backed up, what's only retained, and what would take too long to recover.

Where data protection breaks down

Most Data Loss Starts With Believing Retention Was Backup.

The policy may be in place, but proving you can actually restore what you need, when you need it, is where most businesses get caught out.

Retention Mistaken for Backup

Microsoft guarantees the platform stays available. It does not promise your data comes back the way you left it — that responsibility stays with you.

Backups Exist, Restores Are Untested

Backup jobs may be running, but nobody has confirmed a mailbox, file, or site can actually be restored — until the day it has to be.

Patching Falls Behind Until It's Too Late

Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 no longer receive security updates. Every new vulnerability disclosed from now on stays open, with no patch coming.

Data protection shouldn't be a surprise during an outage. The goal is to know what's backed up, test that it restores, and keep systems patched before something forces the question.

Data protection requires more than a policy

Retention Is a Policy. Backup Is a Guarantee.

Frameworks, insurers, and auditors increasingly ask not just whether you retain data, but whether you can restore it. eMazzanti helps connect Microsoft 365 retention, independent backup, patch management, and recovery testing into one practical program.

Backup vs. retention review: confirm what's actually recoverable versus merely retained across Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams.
Exchange Server patch assessment: identify unsupported or unpatched systems, including Exchange 2016/2019, before the next disclosed vulnerability hits.
Restore testing: verify backups actually work by testing recovery, not just confirming a job completed.
Ongoing monitoring: keep patching, backup, and retention aligned as your environment and requirements change.
A practical data protection path

Know What's Backed Up. Test the Restore. Keep It Patched.

1

Assess Your Recovery Readiness

Identify what's truly backed up versus only retained, and document where restore testing or patching is missing.

2

Close the Real Gaps

Implement independent backup, patch or migrate legacy Exchange Server, and align retention with your actual legal and compliance needs.

3

Test & Maintain

Run restore tests, confirm recovery times, and keep protection current as Microsoft 365 and your data grow.

Data protection & backup FAQ

Questions Businesses Ask About Data Protection.

Isn't Microsoft 365 retention the same as a backup?

No. Microsoft 365 retention policies preserve data for compliance and legal hold purposes, but they aren't designed to restore what you actually need — a deleted mailbox, a corrupted file, or data wiped by ransomware. Microsoft guarantees the platform stays available; the data itself remains your responsibility.

What happens now that Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 support has ended?

Enrolled organizations no longer receive security patches for either version, including for any vulnerability disclosed from this point forward. Every new flaw stays open indefinitely unless you migrate or upgrade to a supported platform.

How do I know if my backups would actually work?

The only way to know is to test a restore — a mailbox, a file, a SharePoint site — and measure how long it takes and whether the data comes back intact. A backup that has never been restored is a guess, not a safety net.

What's the difference between backup and eDiscovery or retention?

Backup protects against loss, corruption, and ransomware. Retention and eDiscovery are about producing specific records on demand for legal, compliance, or audit purposes. Most businesses need both, and they aren't interchangeable.

Can you help migrate off Exchange Server 2016 or 2019?

Yes. We assess your current environment, plan the migration path — whether to a supported on-premises version or to Exchange Online — and handle the technical cutover with minimal disruption.

What is a Data Protection Gap Assessment?

It's a review of your current backup, retention, patch status, and recovery process against what your business would actually need in an outage, breach, or legal request, with clear, prioritized findings you can act on.

Do you only work with Microsoft 365, or on-premises systems too?

Both. We support Microsoft 365 backup and retention as well as on-premises Exchange Server patching, migration, and recovery planning.

Do you provide data protection services outside the New York and New Jersey area?

Yes. eMazzanti is headquartered in Hoboken, NJ and supports businesses nationwide with data protection assessments, backup implementation, Exchange Server migrations, and ongoing recovery testing.
