My Favorite Scam Email of 2024: A Comedy of Errors

The Setup: Scam Emails Meet Fantasy Novels

Picture this: It’s 6:30 AM on a chilly February Tuesday. You’re nursing your first cup of coffee and sifting through your inbox, expecting the usual client reports and newsletters. Suddenly, an email jumps out: “URGENT: Your Pet Dragon Insurance Claim is Pending.”

This was no ordinary phishing attempt. It was a masterclass in absurdity, and it instantly made my morning. As someone who’s spent years helping businesses secure their email, I thought I’d seen it all. But this email? It was the kind of creative, outlandish scam that makes you laugh before you even spot the red flags.

Meet Jerome, the Fantastical Insurance Scammer

The sender? Jerome P. Wigglesworth III, Esq.—purportedly of the “International Fantasy Pets Insurance Corporation.” Most scam emails try to sound official, but Jerome went all-in on the fantasy theme. The message began, “Dear Valued Dragon Owner, We have received your claim regarding the fire damage caused by your registered pet dragon (Serial Number: DRG-42069) to your neighbor’s golden unicorn stable.”

By this point, my coffee was cold, but I didn’t care. This was better than my usual morning entertainment.

The Claims Process: Crypto for Dragons

The email explained that my “dragon insurance premium” was overdue. Unless I paid 500 Bitcoin (because, obviously, dragons use crypto), my claim for the unicorn stable would be denied. The itemized list of damages included:

  • 14 bales of rainbow hay
  • Three bottles of unicorn tear polish
  • A “gently used” magic saddle

The attention to detail was impeccable. Jerome even attached a “Dragon Owner’s Responsibility Code,” with the first rule stating: “All dragons must be equipped with approved flame-retardant muzzles when visiting populated areas or unicorn sanctuaries.”

Spotting the Red Flags: Comedy Meets Cybercrime

It’s easy to laugh, but even the most ridiculous scam emails can be dangerous. Here are the glaring warning signs from Jerome’s email:

  • Suspicious sender: dragoninsurance123@totally-legit-insurance.net
  • Clip art logo: A dragon in a business tie
  • Payment destination: “Definitely Not A Scammer LLC”
  • Phishing links: A “verify your dragon’s registration” button

It’s a reminder that social engineering attacks are evolving. Scammers know that humor can lower your guard, making you more likely to click.

The Technical Tricks Behind the Laughter

Even beneath the jokes, there was some technical sophistication. The sender’s IP address traced back to Nebraska (or so they claimed), and they’d even set up SPF records for their fake domain—a tactic you can learn more about in our article on SPF records.

I shared the email with my cybersecurity group chat, and we quickly realized Jerome had been busy. Others had received similar scams featuring unicorns, griffins, and even leprechauns. We started a spreadsheet to track the menagerie of mythical claims.

Lessons for Your Business: Laughter with a Warning

What makes this scam so fascinating is its break from the norm. Most cybercriminals prey on fear or greed, but this one used entertainment to lure victims. It’s a powerful reminder that scammers are constantly innovating—and your defenses must evolve, too.

I used Jerome’s email as a centerpiece in my next client security training session. It kept everyone awake and illustrated how even the most outlandish messages can hide real threats. If you’re looking to strengthen your business’s defenses, we recommend our security and privacy services and ongoing IT support.

The Jerome Legacy: Creativity in Cybercrime

Months later, I still chuckle at the memory of Jerome and his dragon insurance scheme. It’s a testament to the creativity of cybercriminals—and a reminder that vigilance is more important than ever.

If there’s one thing you should take away from this story, it’s that no matter how silly a scam email seems, it still poses a risk. Always scrutinize unexpected messages, never click suspicious links, and educate your team on the latest tactics.
