Clean Energy Firm Increases Sustainability with Windows® 7 Professional & HP 5310m

Deepwater Wind’s mission is to help build thriving cleantech economies that provide jobs, reduce U.S. dependence on foreign energy sources and support efforts to increase sustainability. In fact, the firm is one of the few U.S. developers pushing for clean, reliable, and renewable energy power by developing wind farms in deep waters off of the east coast.

To find technologies that support this mission, Deepwater Wind relies on its IT partner, eMazzanti Technologies, for its excellent guidance and support. When eMazzanti Technologies shared with Deepwater Wind the powerful, energy-efficient design of the HP 5310m ProBook running Windows® 7 Professional, the company knew it had found the right balance of performance, speed and green technologies that would help its employees cultivate innovative ideas and develop sustainable solutions in less time.

Situation

While managers wanted to deploy more powerful technologies that would improve employee efficiency, they needed to ensure that any new systems would help the firm reduce energy consumption. One such challenge employees routinely faced was the difficult and tedious process of connecting to the right network printer at the right time.

In addition, locating important files took longer than employees would have liked, as did communicating technical issues with IT experts. Managers also needed to fortify system security to keep business-critical files safe from intrusion. At the same time, the firm was seeking more durable systems that would last as long—or even longer—than projected.

Solution

To accomplish this, Deepwater Wind turned to eMazzanti Technologies, a Microsoft® Gold Certified Partner, for help. Applying its expertise and industry insight, the IT firm suggested that Deepwater Wind try the HP 5310m ProBook running Windows 7 Professional.* Deepwater Wind managers accepted this recommendation and have been pleased with the results.

“eMazzanti Technologies is a leader in IT support,” Ian Kelly, Controller of Deepwater Wind, remarks. “And they have consistently recommended the best—which is why we now have Windows 7 Professional and the HP 5310m ProBook.”

Benefits

Enhancing Efficiency The HP 5310m ProBook’s long-lasting battery life and energy-efficient design, along with Windows 7 Power Management settings (which uses features like adaptive screen display brightness), work in tandem to extend notebook life while reducing power consumption.

“The energy-efficient design of the HP 5310m ProBook along with Windows 7 Professional Power Management has given us a more powerful system that actually reduces power consumption,” says Kelly. “And every little bit of savings helps.”

With Windows 7 Professional Location Aware Printing, users no longer need to manually select and wait for the right printer to connect. What’s more, because employees no longer need to reprint documents due to inadvertently sending them to the wrong printer, Deepwater Wind is reducing paper and ink costs—and increasing security.

According to Kelly, “Location Aware Printing is saving time and it’s also cutting down on paper and ink costs while boosting security and sustainability.”

Improving Sustainability

Windows Search makes it faster easier than ever to locate files, folders, applications and even emails. Plus, since eMazzanti Technologies deployed the Microsoft Windows Server® 2008 R2 across Deepwater Wind systems, the energy firm’s employees can also easily locate data stored on the company server.

As Kelly notes, “eMazzanti Technologies helped us upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. And now that we have Windows Search, we can find files not just locally—but across the whole server—in seconds.”

Problems Steps Recorder is a new feature in Windows 7 Professional that enables users to take live recordings of their interactions with programs and applications and share this information with IT professionals. For Deepwater Wind, this has improved the way employees communicate technical issues with eMazzanti Technologies professionals.

“Before Problem Steps Recorder, our employees had a hard time relaying details of IT issues,” says Kelly. “Now that they can use this tool, they can communicate better than ever—saving everyone time and frustration.”

More Security and Sustainability

The Encrypting File System included with Windows 7 Professional enables users to easily encrypt important files and folders—giving them the peace of mind in knowing sensitive information is always protected.

“Windows 7 Professional Encrypting File System helps ensure that everything we create internally stays internal,” Kelly says. “I feel more confident that information won’t get into the wrong hands.”

The HP 5310m ProBook Built-to-Last and Built-to-Conserve design integrates durable yet lightweight features with BFR/PVCfree 17 options that use materials with lower environmental impact. For Deepwater Wind, this translates into longer-lasting— and more environmentally friendly— systems that support their commitment to green technologies and practices.

“The HP 5310m ProBook is truly built to last,” Kelly points out. “Even better, it uses environmentally friendly materials. This is the machine of the future—and it’s aligned what we, as a company, stand for.”
