Repertorio Español’s mission is to present the great wealth of Latin American and Spanish culture on stage. Associate Producer José Antonio Cruz says, “We present plays from Latin America, classical plays from Spain, and plays written by Hispanic Americans. We also do musicals, concerts, zarzuelas, and flamenco shows. Repertorio is a true repertory company, which means that we have approximately 15 different productions that we rotate constantly. Every year, we do 350 performances of these 15 different productions. It’s a very European way of doing theater. As a repertory company, we allow our audiences to enjoy a wide range of productions.”
Clearly, this requires a major, ongoing commitment of time and resources. “We are the most active Spanish-language theater company in the United States, but we’re still very small,” Cruz says. “We have a staff of 12 people, which sounds large, but there’s a lot of work to do.”
