Windows 8 – fast and fluid touch technology
used with permission from HP Technology at Work Ever wondered why you can download a song instantly to your smartphone but then have to wait hours, even days, to install new computer software in the office? With the new Windows 8 operating system, Microsoft has broken the barrier between our professional and private worlds and produced an operating system that offers instant access to exactly the apps we need, both in and out of the office, at the touch of a fingertip.Want to log in? Just swipe the screen. Enter your password? Touch the picture. You can do everything you want, instantly. No wonder Microsoft’s CEO Steven Ballmer has described 2012 as an “epic year”.

Radical redesign

Every aspect of Windows 8 is intensely personal, offering a totally modern reworking of the traditional Windows OS, and combining your private and professional worlds, whether you use a tablet, laptop, desktop, all-in-one or server. It doesn’t matter what architecture you run, whether it’s Win8 x-86 or ARM – the new user interface is based on Microsoft’s Metro design language, and it’s used right across the range.

Spring cleaning? Don’t forget your PC
used with permission from HP Technology at Work With the hint of spring in the air, your energy level is up and so is your productivity. You’re on a roll at work and suddenly—it starts freezing. And we’re not talking about the weather.PC users have at least one thing in common—we’ve all experienced the distracting error messages, load time lagging, buzzing and whirring that alert us to double-check our backup system just in case the dreaded “blue screen of death” appears. While these signs don’t necessarily mean your PC is going to quit on you anytime soon, they are symptoms of a straining hard drive and an overworked machine. But it is spring after all… why not extend your spring cleaning regimen to include your PC as well? Follow these simple tips to organize your files, purge unnecessary data and back up important information so your PC is working efficiently and smoothly—and so are you. Read more

Find Out How To Get An Extra Hour Every Day
used with permission from the HP Small & Medium Business SiteTime pressure is acute and frustrations such as commuting, inflexible working hours and tedious meetings make it worse. To get things started here are ten sure-fire ways to get an extra hour a day.Do emails on the go. With an HP notebook with 3G Mobile Broadband, you can get ahead of your emails before you even get to work. (Broadband connections require separately purchased wireless data service contracts.) Work from home. Instead of commuting to work, why not stay at home and put the journey time to better use? Using HP technology, you can still stay in touch with your colleagues and access all your email and work files.

Virtual meetings. The majority of office professionals reckon they could save up to six hours a week simply by not traveling to off site meetings. Video, web (such as HP Virtual Rooms) or phone conferences can reduce the amount of time you spend traveling to meetings.

Get up earlier. An hour before work is more productive — mainly because it is quiet — than any other time of the day. Changing sleep habits takes a bit of work but it isn’t difficult.

Concentrate more. If you can get the same work done quicker with better concentration, it will free up time later for other things. The key concept is ‘flow’. This is a mental state in which a person is fully immersed in what they are doing. Disruptions, such as phone calls and emails, break the flow. It can take 10-15 minutes to regain your concentration, so avoid disruptions. Switch off email, put the phone on voice mail and consider getting noise-canceling headphones.

7 Steps to Good Work Habits Away
From The Office

by Jeff Wuorio

Your laptop was built for doing work away from the office. Making sure your self-discipline comes along for the trip is something else. Many business owners and executives associate an office environment with the will to work. As a result, they fret that they—or their employees—may be less than diligent when working from home or a hotel room. But keeping up your self-discipline away from the office is just a matter of thoughtful planning. Here are seven strategies, culled from feedback from experts and my own experiences. 1. Know your work patterns.
This philosophic tenet is particularly important to being disciplined away from an office environment. Consider what makes you more productive: being proactive well in advance or sweating things out under a tight deadline. Knowing what sets your wheels turning can help you establish work patterns and systems that bolster your discipline. “Are you motivated by feeling good or fear?” asks Jan Jasper, author of Take Back Your Time: How to Regain Control of Work, Information and Technology. “Some people don’t need to plan ahead as much because their discipline comes from adrenaline.”
